چکیده

The idea that gamma-ray bursts might be a kind of phenomena associated with neutron star kicks was first proposed by Dar & Plaga (1999). Here we study this mechanism in more detail and point out that the neutron star should be a high speed one (with proper motion larger than ∼ 1000 km/s). It is shown that the model agrees well with observations in many aspects, such as the energetics, the event rate, the collimation, the bimodal distribution of durations, the narrowly clustered intrinsic energy, and the association of gamma-ray bursts with supernovae and star forming regions. We also discuss the implications of this model on the neutron star kick mechanism, and suggest that the high kick speed were probably acquired due to the electromagnetic rocket effect of a millisecond magnetar with an off-centered magnetic dipole. Gamma Ray Bursts from Stellar Collisions

We propose that the cosmological gamma ray bursts arise from the collapse of neutron stars to black holes triggered by collisions or mergers with main sequence stars. This scenario represents a cosmological history qualitatively different from most previous theories because it contains a significant contribution from an old stellar population, namely the globular clusters. Furthermore, the gas ...

Late-Time Convection in the Collapse of a 23 Solar Mass Star

The results of a 3-dimensional SNSPH simulation of the core collapse of a 23M⊙ star are presented. This simulation did not launch an explosion until over 600ms after collapse, allowing an ideal opportunity to study the evolution and structure of the convection below the accretion shock to late times. This late-time convection allows us to study several of the recent claims in the literature abo...

The Lowest-mass Stellar Black Holes: Catastrophic Death of Neutron Stars in Gamma-ray Bursts

Mergers of double neutron stars are considered the most likely progenitors for short gamma-ray bursts. Indeed such a merger can produce a black hole with a transient accreting torus of nuclear matter (Lee & Ramirez-Ruiz 2007, Oechslin & Janka 2006), and the conversion of a fraction of the torus mass-energy to radiation can power a gamma-ray burst (Nakar 2006). Using available binary pulsar obse...

MeV-GeV emission from neutron-loaded short gamma-ray burst jets

Recent discovery of the afterglow emission from short gamma-ray bursts suggests that binary neutron star or black hole-neutron star binary mergers are the likely progenitors of these short bursts. The accretion of neutron star material and its subsequent ejection by the central engine implies a neutron-rich outflow. We consider here a neutron-rich relativistic jet model of short bursts, and inv...
